JEWLS “There Is No Sunset” EP REVIEW
Germany based singer songwriter, JEWLS, in a world where the sunset often serves as a kitschy backdrop for a supposed happy ending, she dives into the depths of our society and the self-deceptions and illusions to which people all too willingly succumb on her debut album "There Is No Sunset”.
The idyllic image of a Caribbean beach at dusk, an expression of hope – all of it deceives. In reality, it is a cosmic illusion, while the Earth turns away from the sun, unperturbed. "There Is No Sunset" confronts us with the pressing reality of sustainability. It explores the selfishness and narcissism that thrive on an individual level, and the highly complex, often wounded emotions that drive us. In JEWLS' mystical and playful world, partly melancholic, dark soundscapes meet guitars and breakbeats. The album meanders between experimental art-pop elements and atmospheric electro-pop, reminiscent of bands like Ätna and artists like FKA twigs. The artist plays with pop spheres and patterns.
At times, they are broken sounds searching for answers, at other times, we lose ourselves in dreamy guitar riffs. Then again, their voice oscillates between fragility and darkness, as if wandering in the green forests of a foreign world. A hint of rave mixes into their melodies.
