Pihka Is My Name “Reaching for The Out of Range” REVIEW

Pihka Is My Name are a Finland-based duo who combine analogue synthesizers, hypnotic piano patterns and crunchy drum machines. Band members are composer-pianist Henna Helasvuo and producer-sound designer Lasse Turunen.

The band is fronted by animation character called Pihka, an imaginary friend who is not needed anymore. With their art Pihka Is My Name create an audiovisual world you can experience through the eyes of an imaginary friend.

“Reaching for The Out of Range” is the first single of their upcoming sophomore album, to be released in September 2023.

With this energetic track the band introduces a punchier and more analogue sound. They have always gone beyond basic synth knob twiddling, but this time they also exhibit a fresh pop sensibility, vocal harmonies and deep lyrics.

Henna Helasvuo (keys/voc) says: “we had an album almost fully mixed and release-ready in mid-2022. Then we had a lot of gigs and received all this massively positive energy, which we wanted to include and make use of on our new album. So we basically ended up starting all over!”

Lasse Turunen (beats/voc): “That’s really what our new single is all about. Not being afraid to start over, about recognizing the need for change, and about gathering the courage to shake things up, it doesn’t matter how much time and effort you’ve put into something. It’s never too late to start over, if necessary”.

So it’s time to take a look and dive in to this wonderful audio visual adventure!
